It is the beginning of a new year, and with that comes new goals, new hopes and new beginnings.
Let’s get back to the basics and talk about BREATHING. It is something we do all the time without even thinking about it. It is one of the sounds that I love to hear if I wake up in the night and I hear my husband softly breathing beside me, with no conscious effort on his part, his body just knows what to do.
Take a second right now and stop and really listen to your breathing. Is it deep and relaxed or are you doing fast shallow breaths. The latter is more common in our rushed busy society. Breathing is natural but because our mind and our bodies are so busy we tend to breathe fast and shallow.
Our bodies need oxygen, oxygen shortage in the body is linked to every major illness. The main energy source for our brain is oxygen. Our cells require oxygen, our digestive system, our blood and the list goes on.
The good news is that this simple breathing exercise can help to relax you as well as supply the needed oxygen to your body.
Breathe in for 4 counts
Hold for 7 counts
Breathe out (blow out) for 8 counts
Repeat 4 times. Do this 2x a day
Do this exercise when you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep at night.
Check in with yourself a few times a day and see if you are breathing quick shallow breaths or are you breathing deep and slow. Slow down and take the time to check in with your breathing.
